New York State: Lawmakers Delay Vote on Smoke Ban

Lacking the votes to either pass a tough indoor smoking ban or to kill it, Suffolk lawmakers last night elected to let the measure smolder until their next meeting.

But critics argue workers have a choice about their place of employment and say eliminating smoking would force bars and restaurants to lose customers and lay off workers or close. Restaurant owners said they built separate smoking areas to comply with Suffolk's previous law, and would lose that investment.

Those fears also have been heightened because of a stalemate in New York City over Mayor Michael Bloomberg's similar anti-smoking proposal, which is currently bogged down.

Public-health groups pushed for the ban, which carries a $1,000 penalty.
